One of my all-time favorites is The Smiths “The Queen is Dead.” More recently, I’ve been into Emily Wells; she’s a classicaly trained violinist who brings in some hip hop beats. Check out Futureheads (kind of Brit rock) and Rogue Wave (poppy) as well!
Sounds like an awesome trip, have fun you guys. Say hi to people in RVA for me if you make a stop there.
Here’s some of my favs from 2009…you may have a few of these already. Not necessarily a road trip prerequisite, but a list, most of which leaning towards roots.
Lotus – Hammerstrike
Akron Family – Set Em Wild
BLK JKS – After Robots
Brother Ali – US
Built to Spill – There is No Enemy
Cage the Elephant – Cage the Elephant
Dinosaur Jr – Farm
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes
Mastodon – Crack the Skye (for the 2am shift, hepped up on trucker speed and Mt Dew)
Lisa Hannigan – Sea Saw
Major Lazer
Mos Def – The Ecstatic
The Avett Brothers
The Black Crowes – Before the Frost
The Rural Alberta Advantage
Wye Oak – The Knot
This is tough, since I have no idea what kind of music you like. Here goes:
* Paul Oakenfold – Tranceport
* Radiohead – The Bends or OK Computer
* Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication
* Daft Punk (any album)
* Guns N’ Roses – Lies EP
* Phish – Billy Breathes, Rift or Lawn Boy
* 50 Cent – Get Rich or Die Tryin
* Jamiroquai (any album)
* Led Zeppelin – II and III
* Jane’s Addiction – Nothing’s Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual
Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears – Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is. My favorite from 2009
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes. Not usually into retro hippie folk stuff, but his was good.
Chris Rock – Bring the Pain. Still funny.
Foo Fighters – In Your Honor (Disk 1)
Blizzard of Oz – Ozzy Osbourne
Apostle of Hustle – Eats Darkness
Compilation Album – Forge Your Own Chains (lost Psychedelic Rock , perfect for cross-country driving)

Satellite radio helps, as do Podcasts.

Oh, and lately I got back into Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti. The Rover is a great roadtrip song.
